How Do We Know God Is Real?

It’s the question that has echoed through every generation. For some, faith feels like a leap into the unknown. For others, the evidence of God’s reality is written not only in creation itself but in history, prophecy, and the life of Jesus Christ. One of the strongest proofs comes from fulfilled prophecy, promises made centuries before Christ that came to pass with such precision that coincidence is not a reasonable explanation.

If these prophecies are true, and the historical record confirms them, then God is not a distant idea. He is real, active, and faithful to His word.

Prophecies That Point to Jesus

God didn’t leave humanity guessing. Through the prophets of Israel, He spoke of a coming Messiah who would save His people. These weren’t vague predictions, they were detailed, anchored in history, and fulfilled in the person of Jesus.

  • Isaiah 9 — A child would be born, called Mighty God, bringing light to Galilee. Only God Himself could bear such a title.

  • Micah 5:2 — The Messiah would be born in Bethlehem, a town otherwise insignificant, yet recorded as Jesus’s birthplace.

  • Daniel 9 — The Messiah would come 483 years after the decree to rebuild Jerusalem (457 BC), pointing directly to the time of Jesus’s ministry around 27 AD.

  • Isaiah 52–53 — A suffering servant, marred beyond recognition, pierced for humanity’s sins. Written 700 years before Christ.

  • Psalm 22 — A crucifixion described 1,000 years before crucifixion even existed, pierced hands and feet, garments divided by casting lots, a heart “turning to wax.”

How do we know God is real? Because no human could orchestrate or manipulate centuries of prophecy, written in different places by different people, all converging in one man.

Historical Confirmation

Some skeptics argue the prophecies must have been edited after Jesus lived. But discoveries like the Dead Sea Scrolls prove otherwise. A complete scroll of Isaiah, carbon-dated to 150–300 years before Christ, contains the same words we read today about the Messiah’s suffering.

History also confirms,

How do we know God is real? Because history matches His word with uncanny accuracy.

The Medical Reality of the Cross

God’s reality is also seen in how prophecy aligns with medical truth. When John recorded that “blood and water” flowed from Jesus’s side (John 19:34), he wasn’t describing a symbol, he was documenting what he saw. Modern medicine identifies this as pericardial effusion from heart failure.

Dr. Alexander Metherell, a medical expert on crucifixion, explained that Jesus endured,

  • Hypovolemic shock from blood loss.

  • Disjointed bones and nerve damage from crucifixion.

  • A literal broken heart under the weight of humanity’s sin.

How do we know God is real? Because even the physiological details, foretold centuries earlier, testify to His hand at work.

Theological Significance

Prophecy, history, and medicine all converge on one truth: Jesus died as the ultimate sacrifice for sin. His crucifixion occurred on Passover, directly connecting Him to the sacrificial lambs of Israel’s worship system. Forty years later, the Temple was destroyed and sacrifices ceased forever.

Why? Because the final sacrifice had been made. John the Baptist’s declaration was fulfilled, Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.”

How do we know God is real? Because He not only predicted redemption, He provided it, once for all, through Jesus.

A Personal Challenge

The evidence points to a living God who acts in history, speaks through prophecy, and reveals Himself in Jesus. But the question remains, what will you do with that truth?

  • Read the Gospel of John and see for yourself.

  • Reflect on the brevity of life, “a vapor,” as Scripture says.

  • Decide whom you will serve.

How do we know God is real? Because prophecy proves it, history affirms it, and Christ Himself invites us into a relationship that changes everything.

The King is coming. Choose today whom you will serve.
